Dentistry without compromise
Welcome to
Cambridge Biomimetic & Microscope Dentistry
About The Practice
Dr. Sonderling has acquired the practice of Dr. Peter J. Mcdonald, formerly of Harvard and Central Square. Dr. Sonderling is grateful for the opportunity to continue the caring tradition of his predecessor.
Dr. Ezra Sonderling believes that dentistry should be performed without compromise. This notion has guided him throughout his training, leading to his present practice. It is Dr. Sondering's mission to facilitate his patient's maintenance of their oral health for life. His Cambridge office is a center of innovation.
Dr. Sonderling has received world-class instruction and devoted hundreds of hours of self-study to the mastery of biomimetic & minimally invasive dentistry. These techniques result in painless, long lasting restorations and maximal preservation of tooth structure.
Dr. Sonderling is the only general dentist in Middlesex or Suffolk County to use a Zeiss Extaro 300 microscope. Working at up to 30X magnification, extreme precision is possible. Violet fluorescence enables the detection of bacteria and the precise removal of old fillings.
Dr. Sonderling also zooms out to consider optimizing the whole-body health of his patients. Bleeding gums and a dysbiotic oral microbiome can accelerate the onset of heart disease, alzheimer's and cancer. A customized hygiene program and treatment plan is formulated for all patients after a comprehensive exam and discussion of their dental and overall health goals.

Frequently asked questions
What is Biomimetic Dentistry?
Biomimetic means to mimic nature. First defined by Dr. Pascal Magne and further developed by Dr. David Alleman, the goal of biomimetic dentistry is to conserve healthy tooth structure, prevent root canals and restore teeth that have decay or cracks back to their natural strength. Meticulous adhesive protocols, strict isolation and high magnification are required. A mechanical understanding of the tooth makes possible optimization for non-catastrophic failure modes, keeping your natural teeth in your mouth for life. Many teeth previously condemned to painful and costly extractions and implants can be saved with these advanced techniques. Also gone is the sensitivity you may have experienced after fillings and crowns.
The result is a healthy smile for life.
Why use a microscope?
Try this: look at your thumbnail at arm's length. This is what a molar viewed with standard 3x loupes looks like. Now imagine you're holding a basketball. This is my view through the microscope. My Zeiss Extaro 300-microscope enables a shadow-free view with up to 30x magnification. If a defect can be seen it can be treated. The human eye is able to resolve one tenth of a millimeter or 100 microns. With a microscope, details as small as 5 microns can be resolved.
Do you take my insurance?
Please click HERE to read our section on why your insurance doesn't work like it's supposed to.
Your dental benefits do not influence the care we recommend or provide. The decision to perform any treatment is made following a discussion between the dentist and the patient, prioritizing long-term health. Dental benefits companies do not have a place in the exam room.
Payment in full is expected at the time of treatment. We electronically submit all necessary forms and records to your insurance following treatment. Expect to receive reimbursement by check 2 to 8 weeks after treatment for the covered portion. We are happy to phase your treatment to suit your budget, but refuse to allow the insurance companies to meddle in your health.
For patients without insurance, please read the next section to learn how our in-office savings plan can benefit your family.
What is an in-office savings plan?
Traditionally, patients without dental benefits have subsidized those with insurance. The result is an informal two-tiered system that leads to worse care for all.
Our in-office savings plan allows individuals and families to save by prepaying for a year of routine care and receive substantial discounts on treatment.
Are you a Holistic Dentist?
Dr. Sonderling understands the importance of the oral-systemic health connection and works collaboratively with his patients to identify areas for improvement and solutions to these challenges. Dr. Sonderling is wary of the risk silver mercury amalgam poses to his patients and staff. All treatment is performed with a rubber dam and powerful extra-oral suction unit to mitigate hazardous aerosols.
